The blast occurred at about 2.30pm, when officers from a joint military Mobile Development Unit 44 of the Armed Forces Development Command were travelling in a bulldozer, a backhoe and a bullet-proof pickup truck on Highway 4092 (Pattani-Yala) in tambon Pagu. The unit was returning to base after establishing a model farm for residents in the district.
A 5kg home-made bomb hidden by the road was detonated remotely by radio as the pickup passed, said Pol Col Kowit Rattachote, chief of Thung Yang Daeng police station.
The device was placed inside a fake black and white concrete kilometre marker to deceive security officers.

The bomb injured a soldier and two Air Force officers - Sub Lt Ratchadabadin Charnwitthayanat, PO2 Charnnarong Promchai, 22, and female Air Force officer PO1 Russaree Kama, 28.
A female villager, Sareema Yama, 57, was riding a motorcycle with her two five-year old nieces just as the bomb exploded, and all three were wounded by the blast, Pol Col Kowit said.

All six of the wounded were rushed to Thung Yang Daeng District Hospital where PO2 Charnnarong was pronounced dead.
Ms Sareema and the two children were out of danger, hospital officials said.
The attack occurred near the scene of the motorcycle bomb that killed a member of the army’s peace-building unit and injured several others in March.
