US recognizes Malaysia election result despite opposition claims of irregularities BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MAY 6, 2013
WASHINGTON - The United States has recognized Malaysia's election result, calling it the "most competitive" in the Southeast Asian nation's history, despite opposition claims of irregularities in the vote.
State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the U.S. looked forward to working with the government to be formed by Prime Minister Najib Razak after his coalition returned to power after winning Sunday's parliamentary elections with a diminished majority and despite losing the popular vote.
Ventrell told reporters in Washington on Monday that the U.S. was aware of concerns about voting irregularities and noted the opposition parties faced significant restrictions on access to the media.
He said addressing these issues is important for strengthening confidence in the electoral process, and called on all parties "to peacefully respect the will of the voters."

Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak berkata, sekiranya Anwar tidak mahu menerima keputusan PRU, beliau juga tidak seharusnya menerima keputusan kemenangan di Pulau Pinang, Selangor dan Kelantan.
PRU 13 menyaksikan Pakatan Rakyat (PR) memenangi 89 kerusi Parlimen daripada 222 kerusi yang dipertandingkan dengan PKR, PAS dan DAP memperoleh 30, 21 dan 38 kerusi.
Dalam perkembangan lain, Perdana Menteri Australia Julia Gillard mengucapkan tahniah kepada Najib di atas kejayaannya memenangi PRU13 dan pelaantikannya sebagai Perdana Menteri.
Ucapan tersebut disampaikan Julia sendiri melalui panggilan telefon kepada Perdana Menteri kira-kira jam 1 tengah hari tadi selepas menghadiri perjumpaan khas bersama Ahli Parlimen BN di Pusat Dagangan Dunia Putra (PWTC) hari ini.
Perbualan telefon tersebut berlangsung selama 10 minit.
